Nutrition & Diet Tips For Orthodontic Care
Congratulations on your new treatment! From all of us at the Wilkinson Orthodontics team, we want to congratulate you on investing in an amazing new smile which you will enjoy for life! To help you through this life changing journey, we’ve compiled a few helpful tips and recommendations when it comes to nutrition to best ensure best results.
Extra care is required during Orthodontic Treatment
If you take a look at your braces in the mirror you can see that the brackets and wires have numerous nooks and crannies which can trap food and plaque. This means there may be an increased risk of tooth decay and gum problems while you wear your braces, and why extra care is required during your Orthodontic Treatment as damage to tooth enamel can occur if the teeth and brackets are not kept clean. Areas on the enamel surface may start to lose minerals and leave white spots (early stage of tooth decay).
Oral-Health Friendly Nutrition
Most of us know that sugary foods and drinks can lead to tooth decay. Starchy foods such as potato chips can also get stuck in the teeth for long periods of time which can cause tooth decay. There is also now an increasing concern that acidic foods and drinks like colas (diet & regular), cordials, sports drinks and fruit juices can erode enamel from teeth when consumed frequently or when sipped over extended periods of time.
Eating With Your New Braces
When you are wearing braces you will need to pay extra attention to your diet / the food you chew. Foods that can potentially break or pull the brackets off your teeth must be avoided – such as hard, sticky and crunchy foods. It is also important to limit the amount of sugar intake in your diet, as sugar can get in and around the brackets and cause cavities.
